What does order up mean in Euchre?

By Matthew Underwood

What happens when you order your partner up in Euchre?

During a loner or lone hand, the bidder’s partner discards their cards, and does not participate in play of the hand. In some regional variants (see below), if the dealer’s partner “calls them up”/”orders it up” (on the turned up card), they are obliged to go alone for that hand.

Making the Trump

Beginning with the player to the left of the dealer, each player passes or accepts the turn-up as trump. An opponent of the dealer accepts by saying “I order it up.” The partner of the dealer accepts by saying, “I assist.” The dealer accepts by making their discard, called “taking it up.”

For your partner to go alone, you would have needed to pass, and your opponent would also need to pass. Its also worth noting that the term ordering up is only in the first round of deciding trump, when there is a card face up that the dealer will pick up when they are ordered to.

What is the difference between Euchre and bid euchre?

Bid Euchre is a variation of Euchre. Bid Euchre uses Jacks to Aces from two decks (two of each card). No trump means that there is no trump suit and Aces are the high card for each suit. Each player bids once, with the person to the left of the dealer starting and the dealer ending the bidding round.

The suit of the card that is turned up is offered for trump. The person to the left of the dealer decides if they want that suit to be trump. If they do, they order the dealer to pick up the card (the dealer will discard another one, to get back to 5 cards), and trump is made.
