What does LL mean in fuel?

By Liam Parker

Avgas 100LL is a gasoline specially designed for piston engine aircraft. Avgas 100LL is a product blended in refineries which has a blue dye added. “100” is the octane number and “LL” stands for Low Lead content.

What does ll stand for in a fuel grade?

LL stands for low lead. The most common avgas in use today. The fuel can be used with engines designed for 80/87.

What is LL in aviation fuel?

The various grades of avgas are identified using the Motor Octane Number (MON) combined with the following alpha-designations to indicate lead content: low lead (LL); very low lead (VLL); or unleaded (UL).

The aircraft fuel sold and used at most FBOs and airports is 100LL (low lead) avgas or Jet-A. Jet-A is a high-purity, kerosene-based fuel and used in jet turbine engines and manufactured under a specific ASTM International petroleum standard (D1655), with specific physical properties.

Can you mix avgas with regular gas?

Yes, you can mix any of our race fuels. But remember – if your engine needs an unleaded fuel, you don’t want to mix leaded with unleaded. Doing so would make a leaded fuel which could still damage oxygen sensors and catalytic converters.

The short answer is that, under most conditions, the shelf life of avgas is about one year.

Is 100LL going away?

So in summary, Aviation engines present many unique challenges to the development of Avgas and as such there is yet no firm date to replace Avgas 100LL, but there can be little doubt that eventually Leaded Avgas will be withdrawn from use.

Can you run avgas in a car?

Using leaded avgas in a modern car would ruin components such as the catalytic converter. Conversely, Jet-A wouldn’t work in a gas engine. It would be like putting diesel fuel in your gas-powered car ? it just won’t run.

AV Gas has a MOR (motor octane rating) of 96, R+M/2 rating of 100, and ROM (Research Octane Rating) of 106. AV Gas is lighter than racing gasoline thus more fuel/larger jetting is required.

What does avgas smell like?

Avgas 100LL smells like gasoline (a little different than what you pump into your car, but similar). Jet-A smells like kerosene (not quite “like diesel”, but definitely not like gasoline).

What is the highest octane fuel?

Retail gasoline stations in the United States sell three main grades of gasoline based on the octane level: Regular (the lowest octane fuel–generally 87) Midgrade (the middle range octane fuel–generally 89–90) Premium (the highest octane fuel–generally 91–94)

Is avgas a diesel?

Avgas (aviation gasoline, also known as aviation spirit in the UK) is an aviation fuel used in aircraft with spark-ignited internal combustion engines. Kerosene is also used by most diesel piston engines developed for aviation use, such as those by SMA Engines, Austro Engine, and Thielert.

Avgas is used for piston-engine aircraft, and Jet A1 (as you may see on tankers at airports) for jet engines.

What is AVGAS used for?

Avgas is fuel for small piston engine powered aircraft, while jet fuel is more like kerosene and is used to power turbine engine aircraft.

Why is Jet A cheaper than 100LL?

Jet A fuel costs less than 100LL (avgas) fuel because it is less complicated and expensive to manufacture, less expensive to transport via pipelines, and used in significantly higher quantities leading to economies of scale.

Can I run AVgas in my 2 stroke dirt bike?

AVGas works well in 2-strokes, but shouldn’t be used in 4-strokes because the distillation curve is all wrong and will cause a super lean condition.

The first is that a two stroke motor will run hotter with AVgas. The higher octane of AVgas makes the fuel burn slower and more efficiently. Also the lead in AVgas helps to dissipate heat and acts as a lubricant.

Does AVgas contain ethanol?

Neither mogas nor avgas contain ethanol because it can be nasty for plane engines. However, the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard requires more and more ethanol be blended into gasoline until 2022, threatening the supply of ethanol-free mogas.
