What does it mean when a code is permanent?

By Sarah Rowe

What are Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes? Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (PDTCs) are very similar to regular Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). However, unlike regular DTCs, they cannot be reset by disconnecting the vehicle’s battery or cleared using an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) scan tool.

What does it mean when a code is permanent?

Permanent codes are a special type introduced more recently which can not be cleared using a scan tool. If you have a permanent code the vehicle will clear it itself once the cause has been addressed and sufficient data has been gathered by driving under different conditions (idling, stop and go, highway)

How long does it take for permanent DTC codes to erase?

The whole drive cycle must take at least 10 minutes. After performing a Universal Trip Drive Pattern, the computer clears the code, since it’s “seen” that the problem is fixed and not reoccurring.

Can you tell if codes have been cleared?

When codes are cleared all vehicle emissions tests are reset and will display a status of ‘not complete’. In order to update the test status the vehicle must be driven under different conditions (town, highway, etc) so that the ECM may gather sufficient data to determine whether the tests have passed or failed.

How do I get rid of permanent OBD code?

The only way to clear a PDTC is to fix the underlying problem with the vehicle that originally caused the PDTC and its corresponding DTC to set, and then allow the vehicle sufficient drive time to re-run the monitor that identified the problem in the first place.

How do I turn off permanently limp mode?

All you have to do is waiting for about half an hour before you reconnect it. The underlying step is likely to reset the transmission memory on the whole. Once you restart the car after effective reconnecting, the limp mode would deactivate on its own.

Is there a fuse for the check engine light?

There is no fuse for the check engine light.

Can you erase permanent codes?

A Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored when a DTC is confirmed and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) has been illuminated. A Permanent DTC can only then be cleared by the module strategy and cannot be erased by clearing DTCs with a scan tool, a Keep-Alive Memory (KAM) reset, or battery disconnect.

How long is a drive cycle?

Preparation for it will take eight hours but, all in all, a basic drive cycle test should take around 30 minutes to complete, with about 20 minutes of actual driving.

Will any OBD2 Scanner work on my car?

Most OBD2 scanners and car code readers do not work on all cars. If you are looking for an OBD2 scanner or car code reader, you should check if it works with your particular make and model before buying it.
