What is a spore syringe?
A spore syringe consists of a syringe filled with sterilised water and mushroom spores. Spore syringes are commonly sold online for the purpose of microscopy & mushroom cultivation.
How long can mushroom spores survive in a syringe?
The best place to store a spore syringe is in your refrigerator. We recommend studying our spores as soon as possible after you receive them, but as we discussed above, you can expect refrigerated syringes to last for up to 30 days and often longer.
How do you make a spore syringe?
A quick summary of the process:
Clean down all the surfaces or Still Air Box.Sterilize the water.Start with a clean (ideally) sterile print.Remove the spore print from the foil envelope.Place the print careful in a self-seal bag and seal.Inject sterile water.Using thumb and forefinger wash spores in water.
What is the liquid in a spore syringe?
A spore syringe contains spores suspended in a water solution (often sterilized and distilled). Spores can be viewed in a similar way seeds are viewed in a plant’s life cycle. A spore syringe will create a Mycelium network with many different genetic lineages inside.
How much is a spore syringe?
We recommend to use about 10 – 20 ml – that is 1 – 2 syringes – for small bags (2,5 L content). For larger bags (4,5 L content) we recommend to use 20 – 30 ml spore solution – that is 2 – 3 spore syringes.
How long do spore prints last?
Spore prints have been known to last 18 years! Perhaps longer but this is the longest we are aware of from our customer feedback and our network. Spore syringes do not last as long because eventually the water develops bacteria. A general guideline is 8 to 12 months.
Where do you keep spore syringes?
Spore syringes should be stored in a clean ziplock baggie (like the one used in shipping) and placed in a refrigerator. Refrigerating the syringes increases the length of time the spores will remain clean and usable for microscopy (up to 4-5 months).
How long do mushroom liquid cultures last?
Best results are achieved when used within 2-3 weeks after receiving. Once colonized the culture can be stored in the fridge for 3 months!
Can you make liquid culture from spore syringe?
Midwest’s Premium Liquid Culture Kit saves you time and money on any growing project. Turn one spore syringe into 20 or more! Simply inject 3-5 cc’s of your favorite spores in the culture jar and watch it transform into liquid mycelium. In a few days it will be ready to inject into any substrate jar or spawn bag.
How do you collect spores?
To take the spore print all you need is the top of the mushroom with the gills exposed on the underside. Place the mushroom with the gills face down onto the paper and pop a glass over the top. Leave this for 24 hours. When you return, remove the glass and gently lift the mushroom.
Can you inoculate liquid culture with spores?
Spores must first germinate before they can begin to form mycelium. So, when you inoculate a substrate with spores/spore syringe, it must first germinate before it begins to grow mycelium. Conversely, when you inoculate a substrate with a mushroom liquid culture, it starts growing (more) mycelium almost immediately.
