Is there a big difference between 14g and 16g?

By Sarah Oconnell

Yes, you can. A 16g jewelry is thinner than a 14g hole so it should go in fine as long as you’re willing to downsize your piercing, possibly permanently.

Is there a big difference between 14g and 16g?

As the numbers go up the size gets smaller. 14 IS thicker than 16. ALWAYS. The lower the number, the thicker the gauge so 16g is thinner than a 14g.

Can I put a 14g in a 12G piercing?

No worries though- 14 and 12g are interchangeable thread patterns- meaning you can wear all your pretty and fun 14g jewelry with your 12g posts! I know those sizes sound intimidating, but they are worth it for a comfy, happy, easy healing piercing!

Is industrial piercing 14g or 16g?

Most piercers will have a preference between 14 and 16g for industrial piercings and while having a 14g means you can swap out for 16g jewelry you cannot do it the other way around without pain. This piercing does not stretch well so it’s unusual to find industrial jewelry that is any bigger then 14g.

Is it okay to start stretching at 14g?

The starting point for most people is 14g, which is just slightly larger than a regular earring. If you’ve only recently healed from a regular ear piercing, you may want to start out with 16g tapers, just to be on the safe side.

Here is a good example timeline to get from regular piercing to 00 gauge: 16g to 14g – 1-2 months. 14g to 12g – 1-2 months. 12g to 10g – 2-3 months.

What size gauge will shrink back?

Most professionals in the piercing world suggest going no larger than a 0 gauge, preferably a 2 gauge, if you want your ears to shrink back to standard size. If you stop at this point, you should have no problem with your ears shrinking back.

Can you start at a 14 gauge?

14 gauge is a good size to start if you have worn regular earrings daily for a long time. The difference is pretty small between the 2 sizes, but you for sure don’t want to push it too hard on your 1st stretch (since your ears have never been stretched before).

Can you start with a 14 gauge?

Begin stretching your ear with a size 16 or 14 gauge.

Ears are typically pierced using an 18 or 20 gauge, so 14 is the largest size you can start on and avoid damaging your ears. Starting at any larger than this size puts your ear at-risk of tearing.

Can you wear 14g tapers as jewelry?

In general, tapers are only recommended for wearing in smaller gauges as jewelry. Large gauge tapers will pull the ear unevenly because of the heavy side of the taper.
