Is a sweet potato bad if it has holes?

By Rachel Davis

When it comes to pithy sweet potatoes, as long as the inside of the potato has only a few holes here and there, it should be perfectly safe to eat. If the holes are all over the place, throw it away to be safe. That sweet potato probably isn’t spoiled, but it will taste bad, so there’s no point in cooking it.

What does it mean if there are holes in my sweet potato?

The reason we see holes in the sweet potato is usually the activity of wireworms. This type of worm is known to attack root crops and may affect sweet potatoes to the extent that they have to be discarded and cannot be sold.

Why does my potato have holes inside?

Hollow heart, sometimes called brown heart or sugar center, is found everywhere potatoes are grown and occurs when there is an abrupt change in growing conditions. Openings that are not darkened happened closer to the potato’s harvest. This is why it is important to keep moisture in the soil during dry periods.

The holes are small enough to cut out, and the pests have long since vanished. A few of the larger holes had been occupied by homeless millipedes, while a couple of spuds had slug damage. But most will be fine to eat with a bit of careful peeling.

How can you tell if a sweet potato has gone bad?

If the sweet potatoes start turning soft or mushy, they have gone bad. The same thing is true for sweet potatoes that turned a deep shade of brown to black. Check for weird growths through the skin or the presence of mold. If the sweet potatoes have developed an off-odor, toss the tubers in the trash.

These spots are called internal black spot and are essentially bruising that occurs from the potatoes lying against each other for an extended period of time. The moldy looking spots are a more serious condition that can develop from the bruises, called fusarium.

What eats holes in potatoes?

Wireworms, flea beetles, potato tuberworm and white grubs are all soil-dwelling pests that feed on potato tubers.

Is a sweet potato bad if it has white spots?

White specks in sweet potatoes do not mean that the sweet potato has gone bad. This is entirely normal, and the liquid starch is a mixture of sugar and starch that is not limited to just sweet potatoes. You may notice it when cutting into squash as well.

Several species of wireworms (Elaterid spp.) feed on the roots of sweet potatoes. They are serious enemies of the vegetable and usually begin attacking plants late in the growing season. They are slender, wire-like worms with cream, yellow, orange or brown bodies.

Can you cut mold off sweet potato?

If you notice sprouts on your sweet potato, just cut off the growths and cook as soon as possible. You can remove the spots, and cook and enjoy the rest of the sweet potato. The exception is mold spots; if a sweet potato has begun to mold, throw it away.

How long does it take for sweet potatoes to go bad?

Stored on the counter, raw sweet potatoes will generally last for one to two weeks. If you have access to a cool, dark, dry area (similar to the root cellars of our ancestors), sweet potatoes can last about a month.

Are brown spots in sweet potatoes bad?

Sweet potatoes generally begin to spoil by developing soft black or brown spots. According to McGreger, if the spots of decay are purely superficial, they can be cut away. As for any developing sprouts, those can be cut off too.

Select sweet potatoes that are dry, smooth, firm, and heavy in the hand. Spoiled sweet potatoes have soft, spongy spots. They might have turned dark brown or black. Any mold is suspicious.

What is eating my sweet potatoes?

Voles (Microtus spp.), ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), and gophers (Thomomys spp.) have a common taste for sweet potato vines. Their vine damage is generally concentrated at the plant crown right above the soil, as they eat their way up from the tubers.
