Look for a karat stamp; 10k (also written as 417), 14k (585), 18k (750), 24k (999). If it’s stamped, it could be real. Fake items are generally not stamped at all, or they’ll say things like 925, GP (gold plated), or GF (gold filled).

The most straightforward way to check the karat of your gold jewelry is to look at its surface and see if there are any markings. Gold jewelry usually has its karat number stamped on it. If your jewelry is 18 karats, it should have a marking that reads “18K”, “18KT” or something similar.

How good is 18 karat gold?

18 karat gold is purer and, well, more gold than 9 karats, so it’s always best to opt for 18 karats if you can. It doesn’t tarnish, it’s more durable and because it costs more, it’ll be worth more in the long run. Conversely, 9 karat gold contains a higher proportion of other metals so it will tarnish over time.

18ct, 22ct and 24ct Gold won’t tarnish, or change colour, but these are soft metals and do scratch. A professional polish and clean is recommended from time to time. These high carat golds have more gold and less other added metals than low carat golds.
