Find the removable door on the outside of your furnace that is usually lengthways along the front bottom of the unit. Open or pull off the door and look at the interior metal of the door. There should be a label here stating the furnace’s serial number.

Where is the furnace model number located?

The model and serial number can be found on the rating plate on the inner wall of your furnace or air handler. A dealer should be involved in accessing the serial number.

Is my furnace 1 or 2 stage?

A furnace with single-stage heating contains a fixed gas valve and a single-speed blower motor. These furnaces are either on and running at full capacity or off. A model with two-stage heating contains a two-stage gas valve and a variable-speed blower motor.

How do I know if I have a gas furnace?

If it is a gas furnace, there will be a small window on the front of the furnace where you should see a blue glowing flame. You should also be able to hear the noise from the gas burner. Electric powered furnaces do not have a glass window with a blue flame and do not make any noise when idle.

You can find the model and serial numbers (M/N and S/N) for your furnace by removing the top-front service panel and looking to the left side of the interior cabinet or the top of the blower deck, depending on whether your system is an 80% or 90% AFUE unit.

How do I find out what year my furnace is?

Look at the first four digits of the serial number once you find it. The first two digits can be the week of the year that the unit was manufactured, with the third and fourth number indicating the year. A serial number starting with 0193, for example, may have been made the first week of 1993.

How do you tell if your furnace is natural gas or propane?

Once you locate the appliance, take a look at the front panel. You should be able to see the heat exchanger. If not, remove the panel using a screwdriver. If you see a blue flame glowing on top of a bed of coils within the furnace, you have a natural gas-operated furnace.
