Sow 25mm (1”) deep in dark damp soil and 10-15cm (4-6”) apart. Germination is slightly slower than other beans and plants can remain fairly small until hot weather arrives. Remove weeds regularly and water well during dry periods. Easy to sow in most cultivated soils and needs a sunny position.

How tall do snake bean plants grow?

Snake beans can grow up to half a metre or longer but tend to become a little tough if allowed to grow to this length (i.e. the beans at the bottom of the photo). They are best eaten when 30 cm or so in length while seeds are small, and they are young and tender.

How do you harvest snake beans?

Snake beans are harvested at an immature stage when the pods are fleshy and before the seeds within the pods are fully mature. Harvest usually starts 6–8 weeks after sowing when the beans are 35–75cm long. Beans need to be harvested by hand several times a week, if not daily, over the production period.

Can you eat snake beans?

The tender pods are either eaten raw or cooked. They are commonly used in stir-fries and curries in most Asian dishes. Snake beans may be eaten both fresh and cooked, but the younger and slender varieties are the best in taste.
