How do I know if my flexplate is cracked?

By Mia Kelly

The classic and most obvious symptom of a cracked flexplate involves the sound it makes while the engine is running. Descriptions of the sound include clanking, chirping and a light knocking. The reason for the sound involves the flexplate’s location and its function.

What does a broken flex plate sound like?

A loose bolt on a flexplate or a crack between it’s bolt holes; can result in a knocking or rattling sound. The sound is very similar to a bad connecting rod and is often, misdiagnosed.

What does a warped flexplate sound like?

Listen for any rhythmic clunking or grinding noise while the engine idles in park or neutral, or idling in gear with a foot on the brake pedal.

What are the symptoms of a cracked flywheel?

5 Symptoms of a Bad Flywheel (and Replacement Cost)
#1 –Gears Slipping.#2 – Burning Smell.#3 – Clutch Chatter.#4 – Clutch Pedal Vibrates.#5 – Clutch Drag.

What does a cracked flexplate cause?

When a flexplate cracks, it often produces a loud knocking noise as it rotates. The sound is very similar to a bad engine rod and is often misdiagnosed. Removing the bolts to the torque converter and sliding it back into the transmission will often reveal the real problem.

What can cause a flexplate to break?

Diagnosing Flexplate Failures

The following causes for cracked flexplate failures: 1) Out of balance engine or torque converter. 2) Bad starter drive can cause teeth or ring gear to wear rapidly or break off. Teeth can also break when engine is running and starter is engaged.

Can you drive a car with a broken flexplate?

Of course you can—just use a different vehicle. What happens with “a bad flywheel” depends on what’s bad. The flywheel includes a “ringgear” which the starting motor meshes with to start the car. Those gear teeth can chip and break off and eventually the starter motor won’t rotate the engine.

How much does it cost to replace a flexplate?

Based on all these factors, you can get your flexplate under $100 or for a couple of hundred dollars. Combine all of the factors mentioned above, and you safely total a cost of around $1200-$1500 to replace your flexplate.

What does a failing torque converter sound like?

A few signs indicating a malfunctioning torque converter include shuddering coming from the transmission while driving, gears changing at a higher than normal engine speed, and odd noises such as clicking or whirring.

Does the flexplate spin in neutral?

Yes, it does. An internal combustion engine’s flywheel is connected to the crankshaft and is spinning all the time (as long as the engine is running).

What is flywheel noise?

The primary and secondary flywheels are connected by springs. A dual mass flywheel actually dampens excessive vibrations from the engine, which are most noticeable at idle. If you have excessive rattles and noises coming from the flywheel unit, that almost always means that the dual mass flywheel is starting to fail.

What is the difference between a flexplate and a flywheel?

Flexplates are generally much thinner and lighter than a flywheel because of the elimination of the clutch surface. While there are some exceptions, if your vehicle has a manual transmission, you want a flywheel, and if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, you want a flexplate.

How do I know if my torque converter is broken?

6 Signs of a Failing Torque Converter
Loss of Acceleration. Slipping Between Gears. Vehicle Won’t Shift at All. Transmission is Overheating. Transmission Fluid Leak. Bad Transmission Fluid.

What are the symptoms of a loose torque converter bolt?

When the torque converter starts malfunctioning, you may feel shuddering and even slipping in overdrive. You usually notice your car shuddering because it feels like it’s vibrating. Your car will vibrate even when you’re not going very fast. The shuddering makes the car lag and is very noticeable.
