Do crayfish get lonely?

By Liam Parker

I really doubt that crayfish are capable of feeling lonely. I think your best bet is to provide a variety of plant matter, algae, and detritus to keep it occupied with foraging. I don’t think adding additional fish or crayfish will improve it’s quality of life.

Crayfish are territorial and can be aggressive, so it is best to only keep one in a 10- to 15-gallon tank. If you want to keep more than one, choose a much larger tank with plenty of room for everyone. Line the bottom of the tank with about 2 inches of fine sand or very small gravel for him to dig in.

With the small crayfish (such as Cambarellus), you can keep neon tetras, mollies, platies, swordtails and small catfish like Ancistrus. They’ll sometimes eat fish and plants (frogs, too), but fish are seldom eaten because crayfish normally are not able to catch healthy animals.

These crayfish can live in almost any freshwater aquarium and are among the toughest freshwater tank inhabitants available to the hobby. They are well known for keeping tanks clean and free of waste, and are especially useful in large aquariums of 30 gallons or more.

Use conditioned tap water, spring water, or well water. The water should cover the back of the animal, and needs to be no more than 15 cm (6″) deep. If kept in deep water, crayfish can deplete the oxygen near the bottom. Since they cannot easily swim to the surface for air, they may suffocate.

How many crayfish can I put in a 10 gallon tank?

A single crayfish can be kept in a relatively small aquarium. A 5 to 10 gallon aquarium is usually more than adequate, especially if regular water changes are provided. Crayfish are notorious for hiding their food, and will often have a stash hidden away in a cave or flower-pot.

They are either too small (Rams and Apistogramma), too delicate (Angelfish), or they will gladly eat your Crayfish (Oscars). As this video shows, when hungry, Crayfish get quite grabby but the right Cichlids are usually able to evade them.

Crayfish are very intelligent for arthropods and highly aware of their environments. Some—such as red swamp crayfish—can even learn to associate you with food.

The scientists assessed the crayfishes’ personalities as “bold” or “shy” based on their “escape response,” namely how long they waited to emerge from their refuges.
