What is a septic tank distribution box?

The distribution box is a component of the leach field system. The job of the distribution box is to evenly distribute the wastewater into the leach field (also known as the drain field). This allows the water to flow into the box from the septic tank and then onto the leach field.

Where is the distribution box on a septic system?

It’s usually somewhere near the edge of your drain field on the end that’s closest to your septic tank. Distribution boxes are usually only about 6 inches to 2 feet deep.

How deep should a distribution box be?

The D-box is normally not very deep, often between 6″ and two feet to the top of the box. You may also see a pattern of parallel depressions, typically about 5 feet apart, that mark the individual drainfield leach lines. The D-box will at or near end of the drainfield area that is closest to the septic tank.

What is the size of a septic distribution box?

These distribution boxes are offered in 3 sizes: 4-Hole Distribution Boxes can handle up to 3 field lines, 6-Hole Distribution Boxes can handle up to 5 field lines, and 8-Hole Distribution Boxes can handle up to 7 field lines.

Should a distribution box be full of water?

You don’t want surface or ground water leaking into the D-box since in any quantity that water will flood the drainfield. If the D-box cover fits pretty flush and smooth atop the distribution box, the amount of water that leaks in through the top should be trivial.

Can a distribution box get clogged?

The openings on the distribution box can clog or pipes can break, causing wastewater to only release into the leach field through one or two openings.

What is the distance between the septic tank and the distribution box?

Common guidelines require at least 50′ clearance distance between a well and a septic system tank or 150′ between a well and a septic drainfield or leaching bed but you will see that different authorities may recommend different distances. Local soil and rock conditions can make these “rules of thumb” unreliable.

How do you unclog a leach field?

Can Anything Unclog an Old Septic Drain Field?
Shock the System With Bacteria. A septic system bacteria packet can help clean out a clogged drain field by allowing waste material to break down and drain through. Avoid Harsh Chemicals. Change to Gentler Toilet Paper and Soap. Contact a Septic Professional.

Where is the distribution box located?

Once the effluent is separated in the septic tank, the distribution box, located in the leach field, dispenses the effluent into the leach field. The distribution box should be laid level with the exiting pipes dispersing the effluent evenly into the lateral pipes with very little to no sludge content.

How does a septic tank work?

The septic tank is a buried, water-tight container usually made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene. Its job is to hold the wastewater long enough to allow solids to settle down to the bottom forming sludge, while the oil and grease floats to the top as scum.

Does a septic tank distribution box have a lid?

Pre-cast concrete Distribution Boxes are sold usually by local septic tank and system suppliers and typically include gasketed openings for the effluent distribution pipe connections and a flat concrete lid that simply mates with the flat edges of the D-box without a gasket and without use of a sealer.

Does a septic tank always have water in it?

A septic tank should always be “filled” to its normal liquid level, or the bottom of the outlet pipe which carries effluent to the absorption area. This normal liquid level is usually between 8” to 12” from the top of the tank on average (see picture at right).

What is a distribution tank?

A septic tank’s distribution box (or D-box) is a container (typically concrete) that receives the septic tank effluent and re-distributes it into the network of attached drain fields and pipes. To put it simply, its job is to evenly distribute the wastewater into the leach field.
