What is combustion air for a water heater?

What is combustion air? It is the air necessary for a gas appliance such as a water heater to function properly. Not to get too basic here, but gas appliances require a certain amount of air to be used for combustion, much the same way that the fire in your fireplace needs air to get started and to keep burning.

Does water heater need combustion air?

In addition to venting, gas and propane water heaters need an air supply for combustion. This may come from the atmospheric air in the house, or it can come through a vent pipe that pulls air from the outdoors.

Lack of adequate combustion air causes improper heater operation, increased maintenance cost, and risks dangerous production of carbon monoxide gas.

Do hot water heaters need fresh air?

As a general rule, water heaters need 50 cubic feet of air per 1,000 BTUs/hr. For example, a water heater with an input of 40,000 BTUs/hr should be in a room (often the garage) with at least 2,000 cubic feet of air.
