If your symptoms do not improve within seven days, see your doctor for further advice. A pessary will dissolve overnight in the moisture in the vagina. If you have problems with vaginal dryness you may notice some undissolved pieces of pessary the following morning.

What if canesten pessary does not dissolve?

Pessaries need moisture in the vagina to dissolve completely. If they do not dissolve, pieces of the pessary may crumble and fall out of the vagina. You may notice this if you have vaginal dryness. To help the pessary dissolve, insert it as far as possible into your vagina at bedtime.

Can I go to the toilet after inserting a pessary?

Once the pessary is inserted you will be asked to cough and bear down to test if the pessary is fitted securely. Some women will also be asked to go to the toilet to pass urine to ensure they have no voiding problems. If the pessary falls out in the toilet do not panic, inform your consultant or specialist nurse.

Is it normal for canesten pessary to come out?

It is normal to notice a white chalky residue coming out of the vagina during treatment using a Canesten pessary if however, you notice pieces of undissolved pessary you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist as it may be that your treatment has not worked. Pessaries need moisture to dissolve.

How long does canesten soft gel pessary take?

Used alongside Canesten® External Cream, it lets you treat both the cause and the external symptoms of thrush. The treatment is easy to use at home and irritating thrush symptoms should begin to disappear within three days of treatment.

How long does a pessary take to work?

If you have a controlled-release pessary inserted into your vagina, it can take 24 hours to work. If you are not having contractions after 24 hours, you may be offered another dose. Sometimes a hormone drip is needed to speed up the labour.

What to expect after having a pessary inserted?

You may notice more vaginal discharge than normal. Your vaginal discharge may also develop an odour. If this happens then you must see your GP who may need to take some swabs and check the vagina for any infection. Vaginal discharge is a common complaint with using pessaries.

A well fitting pessary will not be felt within the vagina. When fitted, pessaries should not cause low abdominal or vaginal discomfort or pain in any upright or lying down position. Some women feel slight pelvic discomfort caused by the process of being fitted.

The pessary should not only be comfortable but should not interfere with your ability to urinate. It should not fall out if you bear down or strain.

How does thrush pessary work?

They keep unwanted substances from entering the cells and stop the contents of the cells from leaking out. Clotrimazole makes holes appear in these membranes, which kills the fungi and clears up the infection. The pessary is inserted into the vagina to allow the clotrimazole to act directly in the area of infection.

How successful is pessary induction?

The trial showed that prostaglandin E2 pessaries were effective in the induction of labour but that with only a 55% success rate the results were less than that quoted by others.
