Can you screw into the end of a 2×4?

By Mia Kelly

Because wood is relatively weak perpendicular to its grain, screws don’t hold that well when screwed into the end grain. … Wood screws do, however, hold extremely well in cross grain. So the trick to making screws really hold in the end of a piece of wood is to give them a bit of cross-grained wood to bite into.

How do I attach 2×4 to edge?

You could bore holes on the edge of the top or bottom piece to about half the width of the board, then use screws to fasten the two boards together. You’ll likely want to use a drill press to bore the holes.

Can you drill screws straight into wood?

You can just drive the screws right into the lumber. It’s fast and efficient. Plus, a pilot hole will help the screw to drive in straight. To drill a pilot hole, select a drill bit that’s the same diameter or slightly less than the shank of the screw you are going to use.

Basically because you cannot successfully use end grain of ply to screw into. It has no “bite” or “body” to bite into. A simple solution is the wood dowel trick. You line up where screws will be placed then drill vertically down through the ply suitable holes to glue in wood dowels.

How far should pocket hole be from edge?

There are no hard and fast rules for spacing pocket holes on edge joints but typically you should place pocket holes 2″ from the end of a board and then typically space pocket holes 6″ apart along the edge of the board. Use wood glue and clamps to create a quality joint.

The main thing is to get one at each end (Kreg suggests at 2″ from the edge), then space the pocket holes in between these 2 in a way that they’re somewhere around 6 to 8 inches apart. 3 – Never do only 1 pocket hole to connect 2 boards, as this creates a natural pivot point without locking the boards in place.

How far apart are pocket screws?

When edge joining the pocket screw is driven through the edge of the wood and this makes a strong joint. My friend Mike at Kreg Tool recommends setting the pocket holes about 2″ from the ends of a board when edge joining. Mike also recommends spacing pocket holes approximately 6″ apart along the edge of a board.

Why can’t you glue end grain?

it sounds like the consensus is that gluing end-grain just doesn’t work well. As this answer explained, When glue is applied to end-grain, the grain acts as little straws and draws a lot of the glue up the wood, away from the joint (similar to how the grain draws water up the tree when the tree is alive).
